Genie and Ladder

DO NOT USE THE GENIE OR LADDERS WITHOUT TRAINING.  Though it may sound like common sense, severe injury and even death have occurred to individuals in other theaters due to failure to follow these guidelines.

GENIE

  • Never use the Genie unaccompanied

  • Always use all 4 outriggers properly secured in the base

  • Ensure the base is level by checking the bubble level on the base of the unit

  • Do not move the Genie while basket is elevated

  • Always use the Genie on a level surface

  • Keep operator body in the basket of the Genie; do not lean or stretch out of the bucket more than an arm's length.  If you cannot reach something, descend and reposition the Genie.

  • When using tools or working with items from inside the bucket, ensure your ground support is aware by calling "Loose tools overhead" or otherwise making them aware of moving items as risk of falling.  If possible, ask individuals to clear the surrounding area prior to using tools/moving items.

  • Do not climb on the rungs of the Genie bucket

  • Unit will not work without electricity

  • Unit may be lowered without electricity by using red lever on base unit

  • E-stop is on base unit and in bucket

  • Do Not

    • Roll or lift when outriggers are not in place.

    • Roll or lift when someone is in the bucket and lift is extended.

    • Stand on rails in bucket.

    • Defeat any safety devices.

    • Leave tools/hardware in bucket.

    • Get paint over-spray on lift.

LADDERS

  • Do not use unaccompanied.

  • A-Frame Ladders must be placed with all 4 feet on the same level surface.  Do NOT use A-Frame Ladders when leaned up against walls or other surfaces.

  • Extension Ladders must be leaned against a wall at an appropriate angle, as indicated on the ladder

  • When ascending/descending a ladder, you must retain 3 points of contact (two feet and one hand, or two hands and one foot)

    • This requires your hands to be empty during ascension/descent.  Wait until you are at your desired height on the ladder and have someone on the ground hand you up the tool or lighting instrument.

  • Do not ascend the ladder beyond the final step as indicated on the ladder.

  • Do not remove or cover labels found on ladders.

  • While on a ladder, be aware of your surroundings and your person.

  • Do not lean excessively when working from a ladder - instead, descend and reposition your ladder.
