GENERAL Preparation
Even when a show is not performing, actions must be taken to ensure audience safety in the Toland and Frederick Theaters. Duties include preparing the facilities, proper training of the House Manager and front-of-house staff, and establishing clear exit plans in case of emergency. Front-of-house responsibilities cover the auditorium, the lobby (including coat check), and the ticket office.
STAFF AND TRAINING
The House Manager and front-of-house staff must be properly trained prior to opening night. Either the House Manager or the faculty member on duty should be First Aid certified, and the House Manager should be familiar with emergency evacuation and response plans as well as the locations and operation of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED), lobby fire extinguishers, and coat check live mic.
Ushers and box office associates should report to the House Manager and receive training specific to their job description prior to the arrival of audience members.
This training may include:
Specific job duties.
Dress codes.
Emergency response plans.
Basic customer service, as needed.
UPKEEP FACILITY AND EMERGENCY PREPARATION
At all times, the lobby and house must be kept up to date with safety inspections and cleared of major fire hazards. General safety precautions in the house and lobby include:
Ensuring fire exits, aisles, and exit pathways are clear and accessible.
Ensuring exit doors are clear of obstructions on both sides of the door.
Ensuring fire extinguishers are properly hung.
Ensuring all fire-fighting equipment is clear of obstructions and accessible.
