FLY SYSTEM Guidelines

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPERATE THE FLY SYSTEM WITHOUT PROPER TRAINING.

DO NOT OPERATE THE FLY SYSTEM WITHOUT FIRST NOTIFYING THE TECHNICAL DIRECTOR OR ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR.

In the Toland Theater, we have a single purchase system:

Follow these GENERAL GUIDELINES for any

operation of the fly system:

  • Close backstage doors and turn on the red flashing lights to indicate that the fly system is in use

  • Ensure you have a clear line of sight between the fly rail and the stage area.  If vision is obstructed due to scenery, enlist the assistance of another individual onstage.

  • Decide upon roles and ensure all individuals understand communication protocols prior to commencing work.

  • Do not operate any linesets that have been locked out (signage indicating they should not be flown).

  • Test all linesets to ensure comfortably in weight prior to fully flying in/out a batten.

  • Do NOT fly battens too quickly; a runaway can happen much easier than you might believe.

  • Ensure you have enough individuals at the fly rail to assist with operation should a lineset suddenly become out of weight (due to weight transfer to the floor, for example).  If necessary, station additional individuals on the mid-rail.

  • Do NOT attempt to transfer items or operate out of weight linesets without the supervision of the Technical Director or Assistant Technical Director.

  • As of 2023, Toland Theatre has motorized lighting battons.  Do not attempt to use the motorized controls without specific training--even if you have learned how to use the rest of the fly system!
